Amazing Lyre bird mimics every bird and every THING Posted May 26
Amazing Lyre bird mimics every bird and every THING

If this video wasn't from such a reliable source (straight from BBC and David Attenoborough) i'd say that this was fake. It just seems too unreal to be true. It mimics all the other birds, but also mimics the camera shutter sound, a car alarm and chainsaws.

This bird is like a programmable machine!!!!!!! I can't get over its talent. Simply incredible.

Posted by: Maryjo 3 June 10:42

Facinating sounds and comments. Great bird.

Posted by: hello 6 June 18:16

HELLO MONTHERFUCKER

Posted by: pamper 6 June 18:35

the comment from hello is VERY inappropriate. There are kids that could see that & as a parent if this were my site, I'd take further action on your comment.

As an Australian I have actually seen and heard the Lyre bird and believe me its for real. Can even mimic a babies cry

Posted by: Wendy 7 June 03:05

This is sooooo awesome & proves all the more there is a God.

Posted by: Jonny 7 June 05:38

UNBELIEVABLE

Posted by: Floyd 7 June 09:32

"This is sooooo awesome & proves all the more there is a God." Right. Like opposable thumbs prove there is an Easter Bunny. I'm so glad Wendy reminded us that nothing proves the reality of deities like obvious evolutionary adaptations (and the repeated typing of vowels for emphasis)

These birds could actually be used as a sort of way to spy on their immediate surroundings.. see if they imitate certain human-made sounds that are not supposed to be there (poachers, illegal forresting or something), or, they could be used to perhaps discover new species- if a lyre bird produces a distinct, unknown song, chance is they may be immitating a hitherto unknown specie.. just a thought..

Posted by: rhart23 7 June 20:42

Is it just me or does it seem kind of sad that the bird has so much contact with humans and people cutting down rain forests that it can mimic them? Think about it right? I don't know it makes me want to go back in time. :)

FFFFFUUUUUCCCCKKKKKK!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Kahsel 8 June 03:05

I don't see what is so amazing? It is just a lyre bird. Perhaps I am used to them? :s

Posted by: SirOJ 8 June 05:12

I wonder what it would taste like?

Posted by: Malaku 8 June 05:37

"Posted by: SirOJ I wonder what it would taste like?" Gold. Pure, comedy gold. An answer: Like a chainsaw.

Posted by: KrisFM 8 June 08:41

Wendy said, "This is sooooo awesome & proves all the more there is a God." May I ask...HOW? Not trying to be rude or anything, but is that always your answer to life? Well, I guess the reason why there is sound coming from my computer is because of God..

Posted by: amazed 8 June 11:36

that is INCREDIBLE. I never imagined the bird could mimic EVERY NOISE.

Posted by: Apryl 8 June 11:53

Aww that's kinda sad that he knows those noises.

Posted by: Ratha 8 June 14:20

This is amazing. I've heard of lyre birds and what great mimics they are, but to actually hear one...

Posted by: logan 8 June 17:27

Completely awesome, but its actually really depressing to hear him mimic chainsaws and car alarms when you think about it :(

Posted by: kianga0 8 June 20:44

I think the managers of this site need something to stop brainless idiots from commenting.

Posted by: ebay australia 8 June 23:45

Wow that is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen! Fucking Unbelievable!

Posted by: ddl_smurf 9 June 04:00

Apryl said "Aww that's kinda sad that he knows those noises.": Agreed. Is no one else saddened that the two noises the lyre choose to scare off animals are camera shutters and chainsaws? What did they use before we came? Are we the embodiment of terror for these beauties?

Posted by: anti-wendy 9 June 11:44

Does the existence of poisonous snakes/spiders then prove the existence of the devil? What about famine, terrorism and birds that can't make any sound at all ? Does the prove the non-existence of god? What a stupid god-botherer you are. Let's all pray for Wendy.... NOT!

Posted by: AzzMunkie 9 June 19:48

That's cool. I want one for me house. Of course, guests may be put off when me bird starts imitating the sex sounds.

Posted by: dandman35 9 June 20:43

Bunch of punks ganging up on Wendy like that. I'm sure all she meant was that something so complex that can do such an extraordinary task had to of been created and not just evolved. Who cares whether you agree or not, ya don't have to be dicks about it.

Posted by: freid 9 June 20:58

Hmmmm....i wonder what he tastes like...

Posted by: motorhead 10 June 08:15

I wonder why the guy who posted this video consider one of the world's most experienced, most well known and most respected natural documentarist an unreliable source... It beats me.

Posted by: cutey 10 June 14:08

no dude..he says if it wasnt for the documentarist, he would have considered it fake.

Posted by: motorhead 10 June 18:37

mea culpa... :)

Posted by: born again 10 June 20:59

It doesn't matter whether you believe in God or not for Him to exist. Just keep on disbelieving and you will find out sooner than you really wanted too. hb

Posted by: Val Luscott 11 June 15:58

Loved the mimicking of the Kookaburra. I wish I had seen a lyre during my year Down Under!Saw lots of kookaburras.

Posted by: Jeanette 12 June 01:35

This is almost unbelievable.

Posted by: helen 12 June 04:36

thanks to all this is brill to see. just great.

Posted by: Diane 12 June 12:54

Absolutely awesome. Truly one of God'S gifts captured by the very talented David Attenoborough

Posted by: Suthernblossum 13 June 10:19

Truly amazing. And about God, let me put it this way. Believe, dont believe, entirely up to you. But if I am wrong when I die, then I have lived a good moral life. But if you are wrong when you die, you know where you are going...

Posted by: Brian 14 June 01:06

If you think about it that bird is so not getting laid. He imitated an anoying car alarm, a dangerous hacksaw that I assume birds are frightened of, and a camera that alerts some animals to danger. Dumbass.

Posted by: Mary B 14 June 08:12

Unfortunately the reason the Lyre Bird is imitating chain saws is due to the fact that it's habitat is under threat from development.

Posted by: HappyEvilSlosh 14 June 17:06

What you have put forth, Southernblossum, is similar to Pascal's Wager. Unfortunately it only works if all faiths are compatible. As soon as they are not it becomes a much more complicated situation.

Posted by: chris 16 June 23:05

that bird is amazing, that cursing dude's got it be american lol

Posted by: Nilesh Sangoye 20 June 01:39

Simply Awesome!!! Pity that the world isnt bereft of morons who have hardly ventured out of their neighbourhood let alone their cities to appreciate the marvels of mother nature. It is sad but true.

Posted by: magdimariajoshua 21 June 09:25

Wow! What a great bird, it can do any sound, we are completely amazed! Well done BBC.

Posted by: the clap 23 June 13:44

"Wendy said, "This is sooooo awesome & proves all the more there is a God." May I ask...HOW? Not trying to be rude or anything, but is that always your answer to life? Well, I guess the reason why there is sound coming from my computer is because of God.." Is it so hard for you to accept that other people may have a beleif system and may see support for it in things that inspire wonder and awe? the lyre bird is incredible, ive never heard of it. when I see trees it makes me think of the complexity of the universe and thinking of the complexity of Lyre's or Humans takes me way past that. Dont hate

Posted by: timthehippie 24 June 15:37

shame that comments are not moderated!

Posted by: JR "Bob" Dobbs 25 June 07:03

Amazing and sad at the same time. By that, I mean the trolls as well as the bird.

Posted by: JR "Bob" Dobbs 25 June 07:05

Oh, and religious fanatics aren't happy unless they are shoving their beliefs down everyone's throat, nothing but frightened bigots, the lot of them.

Posted by: kalani 26 June 21:59

Birds are cool. I like birds. Can this bird imitate fish and transformers? It'd be cool if it can. Imagine if this bird turns into like a giant noise making bird, and kills everyone around with it's noise making ability, except Ninjas, cause ninjas are cool and they can only be killed by better ninjas or their sensei. It'd be even cooler if this bird can turn into a ninja bird. I love birds and Ninjas.

Posted by: an_aussie 26 June 23:08

Actually the reason the lyrebird mimics human noises is they live happily on the fringes of suburbia - we have them near us and they are truly wonderful animals

Posted by: Maxine Bracken 28 June 14:26

This is a nice site except for the potty mouth people who put their trashy talk on.

Posted by: lauren 30 June 23:54

What an extrordinary animal! I'm from a region where we don't have these birds, and it's such a treat to get to see so many examples of it's capabilities.Thanksto whomever did such an excellent job of producing the film so we could all enjoy it.

There is a demonstrated inverse correlation between intelligence and religiosity, that is the smarter you are, the less likely you are to believe in gods, devils, santa claus, and the tooth fairy. Please don't pick on the religious, they're just not very bright and can't help their lower I.Q.

Posted by: TopGun 11 July 17:16

Oh, and I forgot to mention, I'm fresh out of the closet :) Call me you big hunk, hairy man you !!!

Posted by: curious 13 July 22:18

What I find more amazing than the Lyra is the crap that comes from human mouths! How human like that this bird can learn and repeat it's surroundings, much like people. This video only proves to me that we humans and animals are just alike: Products of our surroundings. Obviously those with rude comments regarding a video of a bird don't know anything better than to respond negatively. How tragic our world has become! It's gone to the dogs or shall I say birds!

Posted by: Juan Carlo Rodríguez 7 September 10:05

Just goes to prove you never know where you might see lower animals place sounds in their mouths that no one believes. Oh, and the lyre bird is absolutely wonderful.

Posted by: Sarah 16 September 22:39

It's funny that people rant here about how religious people try to shove their beliefs down people's throats, and still the only OBNOXIOUS comments here come from people upset at a girl who simply marveled at the bird's beauty and associated it with her idea of God, people who probably jump at any opportunity to scoff at people who don't share their beliefs.

Posted by: Roger 16 September 23:12

Sarah, that was not "a girl who simply marveled at the bird's beauty and associated it with her idea of God", that was a person who , as most religious people do, felt compelled to slip a crass and inappropriate promotion of religion into a completely unrelated message board. She deserves any negative feedback she gets.

Taking too long to download.i'll just comment on my 5 mins experience here... A poem... God is great god is lame god is to blame you have a child within,it fights back when relaxed. Better to be serious when the funny type of Baby self comes up. We can say, but what would we like to continue to repeat, to chant to ring out around the.. place? Peace/sometimes, a song?Is it not territory terror tory.Oh boy, oh man, oh god oh god.

Posted by: M.M.Jamal 26 September 16:53

The singing bird takes me out of the world...wow

Posted by: M.M.Jamal 26 September 16:54
